This past Monday the American Library Association announced the winners of their annual book awards. The ALA gives out a tonne of book and media awards every year highlighting the best in American literature. They have five different awards focusing on young adult literature alone! So - just in case your "to read" pile of books isn't in danger of toppling over quite yet - we've included a list of the winners of all the young adult literary awards after the jump!
The awards are...
- The Michael L. Printz Award for the book that "exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature"
- The William C. Morris Award for the "debut book published by a first-time author writing for teens"
- The Margaret A. Edwards Award, which is a lifetime achievement award for an author, as well as a specific body of his or her work, that has written for young adults and has been popular over a period of time.
- The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Award for Excellence in Non-Fiction for Young Adults (which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like)
- The Alex Awards, which are given to ten books written for adults that have "special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18"
And, as if all of these specific awards weren't enough, the YALSA has also named the top ten young adult books from 2009. Awesome!
But, with all this ALA excitement, don't forget to keep an eye out for the announcement of the winners of the Canadian Library Association's book awards (including the Young Adult Canadian Book Award) in April!
